UCLA Doctor Awarded $!4 Million in Discrimination Case

Certain fields have been marked by discrimination for as long as anyone can remember, but that does not mean that disparate treatment is legal. It can be very intimidating to speak up in a workplace where you’re outnumbered and when the individuals creating a hostile environment have impressive professional credentials. No one deserves to be the target of discrimination and speaking up can make things better for you and others who follow in your footsteps. Moreover, you could obtain substantial compensation for the harm you’ve suffered.
A California jury awarded $14 million to Dr. Lauren C. Pinter-Brown, a hematologist/oncologist, after finding that her former employer subjected her to discrimination based on her gender. The eight-figure verdict against UCLA Health and the university’s Geffen School of Medicine includes $5 million in economic damages and $9 million for emotional distress. Though an appeal is expected, this outcome has highlighted what many people say is systemic bias against women within the oncology specialty.
Approximately one-third of oncologists nationwide are women, and many have reported facing challenges related to gender discrimination, including unequal pay, lack of mentorship opportunities and exclusion from leadership roles. Dr. Pinter-Brown’s lawsuit alleged a pattern of discriminatory behavior during most of her 10 years at UCLA. In her complaint, she says her supervisor, Dr. Sven de Vos, would talk over her during meetings, refuse to make eye contact, and attempt to humiliate her in front of dozens of other physicians at monthly meetings. This hostile work environment ultimately led Dr. Pinter-Brown to leave her position and file the lawsuit.
For female oncologists and other professionals who may be experiencing discrimination, this case serves as a reminder that legal recourse is available. Gender discrimination is prohibited under both federal and state laws, and victims have the right to seek justice and compensation for the unlawful actions taken against them.
