Dollar Tree Settles for $1.35M Due to Store Safety Violations

Dollar Tree has reached a settlement agreement with the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) concerning safety violations observed in its stores. The settlement requires Dollar Tree to pay $1.35 million in penalties and adhere to various safety measures.

Penalties

Under the terms of the settlement, Dollar Tree is required to take several steps to address safety concerns:

  • Financial penalty: Dollar Tree will pay $1.35 million as a consequence of the safety violations.
  • Open inspections: The company must undergo open inspections, allowing OSHA to assess safety conditions in its stores.
  • 24-hour hotline: Dollar Tree is mandated to maintain a 24-hour hotline to receive safety complaints, ensuring that employees have a channel to report concerns promptly.
  • Nationwide assessment: The retail chain is obliged to conduct a comprehensive nationwide assessment to identify the root causes of the safety violations previously cited by OSHA. Dollar Tree must then formulate a plan to correct these issues within a two-year timeframe.
  • Correction of future violations: Dollar Tree has a 48-hour window to rectify future violations related to blocked exits, access to fire extinguishers and electrical panels and improper material storage at its stores. Failure to do so may result in fines ranging from $100,000 to $500,000, along with further enforcement actions.

Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su emphasized the agency’s dedication to safeguarding workers. The current administration’s goal is to create a work environment where every employee can return home safely at the end of the day.
